The romanticized notion of the starving artist is tired and exploitative. The expectation that artists should work for little or no money must change.
Please join The Catastrophic Theatre's fight to change this perception. We are launching an aggressive fundraising campaign to increase our artist fees and to get one step closer to paying our artists a livable wage. We need your help to make that a reality.
None of the artists that work for The Catastrophic Theatre can survive on their artistic work alone. Many of our core actors, many of your favorites, have been working for us for upwards of 20 years for an honorarium that barely covers the gas to get them to rehearsals and performances. Almost all of them have full-time “day jobs.” Many work second or even third jobs to make ends meet while pursuing their careers in professional theatre. Our artists double as teachers, servers, and Uber drivers who work from sun-up until late into the night in order to manage. Some are parents trying to support their families. No professional should devote years of their life to an industry and still have to work side-jobs to earn enough money to live.
Our goal for this year’s campaign is $20,000 to go exclusively towards increasing artists' salaries. While this may seem like a large amount, it’s actually a drop in the bucket that covers only a modest $100 raise to each artist on each play. It does, however, get us one step closer towards paying our artists the fees that they deserve.
Houston has the potential to become a vibrant, cultural destination. But this can only happen if we can keep our artists here by paying them a fair wage. Join our cause to create a thriving theatre economy in Houston where artists can flourish.
