Hunter Gatherers reviews

This production is a remounting of the regional premiere produced last summer by Catastrophic Theatre at Stages Repertory Theatre.  I missed it last summer.  I am glad I did not miss it this summer.  If you miss it this time around, then you are a fool.  Because, once again, Catastrophic Theatre shows us what great theatre is all about ... Director Jason Nodler creates magic with his brilliant cast.  No stone is left unturned, no fire untended, no bridge not crossed, no possibility not realized.  Like I said, if you miss this one, you are a fool!  Come on! It’s time to let go of your civilized self and embrace your primitive side!

Catastrophic Theatre's renewed production of last year's Hunter Gatherers is a welcome dose of humor to help get us through the long, hot days of summer ... Shelley Calene-Black and Troy Schulze give wonderful life to characters who could otherwise easily be crowded out by the wild plotting and ranting of the hunters (Greg Dean and Amy Bruce) ... Dean takes his role with visible caveman glee and Bruce, who was in last summer's run as well, knows exactly how to pull off her scheming dissatisfaction ... For a play that begins with the slaughtering of a baby lamb, you can guess it's got a lot to live up to, and it does

Civilization is a ruse. Down in our guts, we're all just bloodthirsty animals. That's the truth devouring audiences of Catastrophic Theatre's remount of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's hilariously gory Hunter Gatherers ... The ridiculous trappings of civilization are put away to make room for the primal desires that keep humans connected to their animal hearts — sex, violence, domination, the urge to procreate ... Through all this is director Jason Nodler's marvelous grasp of every comedic possibility in this script ... The show is good and nasty fun.

Through two couples' frank dialogue and ever-more-outrageous action, the play strips away the veneer of civilized behavior to reveal the beasts within ... Nodler balances the more "real" aspects with the outlandish ones ... Bringing deeper feeling to the quieter moments, he has increased a feeling that the characters and relationships are rooted in reality ... Though Hunter Gatherers may lose some of that "element of surprise" on a second encounter, it's still nervy and funny.

Dinner parties with old high school friends are rarely a good idea. Add an animal sacrifice into the mix, and well, things get frisky ... Nodler directs with a back-away-from-the-mayhem approach, letting the play’s absurd moments have a glory all of their own ... Leave it to Nodler to find tenderness in the most extraordinary ridiculousness ... At Catastrophic Theatre it takes just a lamp chop to bring down Western Civilization. As it should be. Trust me, this is full-frontal fun.
