This production is a remounting of the regional premiere produced last summer by Catastrophic Theatre at Stages Repertory Theatre.  I missed it last summer.  I am glad I did not miss it this summer.  If you miss it this time around, then you are a fool.  Because, once again, Catastrophic Theatre shows us what great theatre is all about ... Director Jason Nodler creates magic with his brilliant cast.  No stone is left unturned, no fire untended, no bridge not crossed, no possibility not realized.  Like I said, if you miss this one, you are a fool!  Come on! It’s time to let go of your civilized self and embrace your primitive side!

The Designated Mourner is one of the most riveting, disturbing, most brilliantly produced plays of the season. Jason Nodler's direction is simple, almost cinematic in its intimacy, and intense, overwhelmingly and fiercely frightening in its purposefully claustrophobic presentation. This is the kind of theatre that makes me love live theatre and I believe you will embrace it wholeheartedly as well.

I predict this play and, specifically, Catastrophic's brilliant production of it to be THE major cult hit of this year's theatre season ... The moment we filter into Catastrophic's performance space at DiverseWorks, we know we are in for a fabulously wild and crazy ride ... Get thy ass to Catastrophic Theatre at DiverseWorks as soon as possible to experience this quirky, queer, quixotic, quizzical masterpiece of modern theatre.

We witness the ins and outs, the humor, the brilliance, and all of the peculiarities of the manic depressive personality of Daniel Johnston. This proves to be a brilliant character study, amazingly and memorably realized by Matt Brownlie, a wonderful musician in his own right, but here working out another day in the life of the songs and struggles of Daniel Johnston...all in all, Life is Happy and Sad is a powerful peek into the life of Daniel Johnston's journey as the musician's cult hero. And the play deeply touches all of us who have ever struggled to be heard and appreciated as artists and musicians.

It's another long, hot summer and it's time for one more piece in a series of brilliant, brand new works that have achieved cult status, as spectacular and entertaining as the one before, and always timely, personal, and poignant...In this world premiere musical extravaganza, the terrifically talented and notorious legend-in-our-midst Tamarie Cooper plays her ever-so- hilarious-self as she shares the stage with Catastrophic Theatre favorites...Watching them all perform is like watching a well-oiled machine in a comedy factory, spitting out perfect bits and schticks each funnier than the next...I, hereby, bestow upon The Tamarie Cooper Show Journey to the Center of My Brain (In 3D!) "Houston's Best and Funniest Original Musical of 2009."
